Steam and the Big, Bad Firewall 2004-12-01 22:55:32

Once there was a program called Steam. It was made for nerds who played counterstrike. One particular nerd who wanted to use Steam to indulge in his nerdy pleasures went away to school. That nerd found that the school had a firewall that blocked counterstrike, and pretty much every other online game.

Does anyone know how that nerd can help Steam bypass the Big, Bad Firewall so the nerd can be happily ever after again?

Seriously guys: I need help. Does anyone know how I can play around the firewall?

Why the fuck would you want to play CS at school.

I caught a teacher playing Quake 3 on his computer at school... no joke.

Good call; I did mean in residence. I guess not many people got that.

Basically, my computer is in my room. My room's internet has the firewall blocking the CS port. How do I get around?

We used to play diablo 2 and starcraft at school during computer classes, sometimes a couple of the teachers would play with us, and they were pretty good. It was pretty awesome.

Once upon a time there was a program named Steam. This program sucked major monkey testicles. It allowed nerds to play Counter-Strike, but it lagged their computers to no end. I-HATE-STEAM.

Okay, I'll say it again - I'm not playing in the classroom. It's just the school firewall that blocks the port.

Can anyone actually give me help or am I just going to hear more about monkey testicles?

Find out which ports actually allow information to go through, and then see if you can get Steam to play through those ports. I'm not particularly good with firewalls, but I bet you could find some open ports at the very least.

Was he or she any good. I know that my History teacher has a high Lv Everquest character. I haven't meet him but some of the really nerdy people say they've played with him online before.

Yea, we play Quake over the networks we set up in our cisco networking class, it is pretty fun.

Oh, and maybe if you could edit Steam a bit to tell it to play through a different port it would work?

You'll have to use whats called a proxy server.
You go into internet options under tools (its different for different Operating Systems) and then under the proxy tab, you type in the IP address and port number of the server. Save your settings, and you should be able to bypass the firewall.

You can find various proxy IPs on the net, just google it and you should come accross some.

Obviously 1080 is open because if it weren't, then pretty much nothing would work. However, Steam won't change ports on its own. I've found out how to redirect it to port 1080 using http-tunnel and sockcap, but that only allows me to sign on - I still can't actually get into a server.

Can anyone tell me how to redirect to a port that allows me to access the servers? You guys know better than me which ports will probably be open, so shoot.

Well, do you know which firewall these computers use?

That sounds like a good idea that's a little different from my first attempt. Can you tell me more? I have Windows XP Professional. When I go to Internet Options, there is no proxy tab or any mentioning of proxies at all.

As for whoever said configure Steam to a different port, there is no option in Steam that allows me to do that.

It's not a firewall on the computers, it's a firewall on the network. That firewall, which I have no access to and never will have access to, is blocking the port I need to use for CS.

Response to Steam and the Big, Bad Firewall 2004-12-02 14:53:46

Don't play Counter-Strike, because you probably suck anyways.

Pretty cool forum, but it provided no assistance. Sorry. I posted a request for help there, however.

That doesn't mean I'm letting you guys off the hook; can anyone help me yet?

Be a good boy and don't play Counter-Strike at school. Socializing with a rare species called "girls" could work.
