Our indie game fan art challenge this week is Mercenary Kings!

Mercenary Kings features art from the incomparable @PaulRobertson, who made the pixel art tankmen in our 2007 layout and the dancing Alien Hominid, Pico and Dad 'n Me kid featured in this post.

It also happens to be a TOTALLY AWESOME GAME!

The ten best entries will win a Steam key for Mercenary Kings. Already own it? Give a gift to a friend!

To enter, upload your fan art to the Art Portal by Friday, April 3rd at 12 noon EST. Tag your entry with "mercenarykings" so we find it. Not scouted? We'll still find it!

Paul Robertsons artwork is just incredible. Those chunky pixels are super-geometrically pleasing.

Word of advice to anyone who wins a Steam key:
Play it on local co-op with a bottle of the hard stuff for major lols.

I was trying to help him get some of his original animations up on NG... By the time we finally had video support, I couldn't find the CD with the original copies... Then I found it while cleaning but our video converter wasn't handling them properly. Now I gotta re-find the CD and try getting them working once and for all.

Commando was heavily influenced by Metal Slug, so they are both just sharing the same influence. Mercenary Kings brought lots of cool updates to the genre though, such as weapon crafting and four player / split screen.

Since it's about fanart it can be whatever pretty much. Dunno how child friendly it has to be tho... Usually these contests do not approve adult stuff unless the contest itself is about more mature things. Like Darkest Dungeon contest probably did not have any restrictions in gore/brutality side. Also the Mercenary Kings is not really safe for young audience (heads explosing and guts flying all over the screen).

It can be any type of art, not just pixel art. PG-13 is probably a good limit to set for these challenges, I imagine violence isn't a big deal but dunno how many devs are excited to see fan hentai and stuff. You never know though!
